Literacy, Discourse, and Liguistics

Literacy, Discourse, and Liguistics

  1. A Discourse is not valued as one type of action or belief, but one whole combination of them all. This is because a discourse or life event that has shaped someone is not one emotion or one way of viewing or hearing it.  It is a combination of every aspect that shapes an event that changes a person’s view or opinion. My own example of Discourse is during sophomore i played lacrosse and started, i was not respected as a player until i showed them that i could move the ball around, create plays and shoot. This Discourse i showed allowed me to become friends with people on the team. We all shared the same experience therefore the same Discourse. A combination is very important because it  allows the people sharing it to feel the same way and connect on that basis. It shapes the people that witness and allow them to come together in one common situation.
  2.  Gee uses the idea that learning about the teachings of a linguist does not mean you are a linguist. Gee uses the example,”you can’t teach them to be a linguist, that is, to use Discourse. The most you can do is to let them practice being a linguist with you”(Gee).  A student goes through school learning about the practices of a Dentist, but they are not a Dentist. This is because a person has to shadow and or have experience in the field to become one. A person who studies how to do open heart surgery is not going to be able to perform like a person who has practiced doing them before.  The experience is not through the teachings learning by listening, but learning by interacting. This is very true in the way that a Doctor will know more about something that is wrong compared to a person who read it online for 20 minutes.
  3. Gee disagrees with the article because he believes they both are wrong. The first woman fails at her job interview because of her grammar and words she uses in her sentences. This exposes her as a person who is not suited the job she is applying for. The other girl is supposedly successful because she uses the right grammar and provides examples of why she should be hired for the job.  Gee disagrees with this cause, because she represents the “wrong values”(Gee). She uses how other people perceive her as her argument of how she should be hired for the job. He describes her values as being ” She views being left in charge as just another form of supervision, namely, supervision by other peoples”. She does not describe the feats she accomplished, but the things only observed by other people.
